Once upon a time, on September 22, 1990, I started dating Russell. Within six months, I dumped him. Then began a period of months where he pursued me, obnoxiously so. :-)

During this time, he purchased a couple of CDs for me. One was Storm Front, released by Billy Joel. Russell asked me to visit him at his home and listen to this song, "And So It Goes." Here are the lyrics )

As we listened to the song together, I felt as if it were Russell singing right to me. The lyrics were such a perfect fit for us. It wasn't long before I reconciled with him, and we stayed together for almost thirteen more years.

Russell and I attended a Suede concert last night with Ett and Linda and Tom and Warren. As always, she's an incredible performer, just wonderful and always a treat.

She sang that song. "And So It Goes." Our song. I gasped after just a couple of notes, instantly recognizing the music. Russell got it just a couple of seconds later. She sang it with such a power that the room was absolutely silent for several long seconds after her last note died. It was absolutely fantastic. Russell and I were both in tears during the performance.

I had to explain to Ett the story behind the song, about how Billy Joel's music got us back together over ten years ago. Then I turned to Russell and told him it wasn't going to work this time. :-)

But he said he's happy for me. He observed that my life is more full now than when we were together. Still, "so I would choose to be with you/that's if the choice were mine to make." He'll always miss what we had.

Of course, now the two of us can't bear to wait for Suede to release her next CD! She seemed to indicate that they had the music lined up and they needed to go into the studio. I hope they don't wait too long!
