My weekend was great!
Apr. 3rd, 2005 11:13 pmDoug M. had to work a little late and got to Baltimore later than we had planned. No big deal, really, but I was really anticipating this visit, once Russell and I had made my home look nice. Once Doug arrived, he and I had dinner at the Mt. Vernon Stable and Saloon, then returned home to watch Logan's Run before going to bed.
We didn't set an alarm this morning, so we woke up gently to the morning light. We snuggled and fooled around a little, answered some phone calls, then snuggled and fooled around a little bit more.
Oh, when he arrived, Doug's first words were, "wow! It is clean!" :-)
Anyway, we had brunch at The Morning Edition with Mark and Jim, a couple who were also at the CBE May 2004 that I attended. The food was good, but the service was slow. I didn't finish my apple-walnut french toast because Doug ordered a Pistachio Nut muffin and a Rum Butter muffin, and TME always serves banana bread with every order. I was half full before my breakfast even arrived!
Doug was describing his recent trip to San Francisco and told us how his host, Gabriel, "forced" him to watch "The View," that daytime tv talk show hosted by Barbara Walters, Star Jones and a couple of other women. Doug hated it. At one point, he exclaimed, "all those women should be shot!" Over his shoulder, I could see a woman overhearing our conversation laughing behind her hand and turning to talk to another woman at a table next to her.
After a few seconds of Doug continuing to rant about this show, the woman called out across the room, "but I like the View!" However, she did admit that she herself hates the first twenty minutes of the show where the hosts chat among themselves. She mutes the show until the first guest comes on.
Doug agreed that the initial bantering drove him crazy, and declared that it was like the National Inquirer, whereupon another woman at a table next to us (who was wearing a great hat, btw) lowered the newspaper she was reading to correct him. According to her, "The View" is worse than the Inquirer. :-)
This conversation then drifted into the Terri Shiavo case, the Pope and gay marriage. It was actually quite stunning to watch.
Oh, I almost forgot. As she was leaving, one of the women slipped up and said, "have a nice day, ladies!" She put her hand to her lips, but we assured her that we would answer to that as readily as anything else.
After brunch, Mark and Jim drove us up to see Sherwood Gardens. Nothing was blooming, so we didn't even get out of the car. We did get to cruise around the spiffy homes in the neighborhood. Mark and Jim dropped us off at my apartment and we napped for about forty minutes before joining Doug's sister, Jann, and her husband, Austin, for dinner at the Helmand, an Afghan restaurant just a couple of blocks from where I live.
The Helmand is a wonderful restaurant. I haven't eaten anything there that I didn't love (well, except for this pumpkin appetizer, but I'm not fond of squash-like vegetables). Today I had a sea bass special, which was perfect as I was still digesting my brunch meal. Jann and Austin both enjoyed their meals, but Doug thought his was just okay, although he said he wanted to come back.
Then the four of us walked to the Myerhoff to see David Sedaris. Doug was the only one of us that had read any of the man's work, so we were pretty clueless. Sedaris was hilarious! Absolutely hilarious! Now I have to borrow as many of his books as I can get my hands on!
One of his lines was something like, "'Shit' is the tofu of cursing. It assumes the flavor of whatever expression you use it in. 'Hot as Shit.' 'Cold as shit.'" That's just brilliant. It's so true.
We followed up with a short stop at the City Cafe for drinks, then we drove Jan and Austin back to their car. Doug stopped briefly at my apartment to gather up his things and he left for home. I miss him already.
