Almost Human
Aug. 23rd, 2005 11:53 amRussell and I had been looking forward to this past weekend for months. Our two favorite performers, Suzanne Westenhoefer and Suede were performing at the convention center in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. We had tickets months in advance and Russell had made arrangements for us to stay with his pal Patrick in nearby Lewes. We had purchased tickets to both events for him as well as a thank-you.
We ditched work on Friday and made an uneventful trip down to the beach. Traffic was okay. We found Patrick's place and dropped off our stuff, then went out for dinner. Suzannne's show was great, but Patrick couldn't stay for it because the convention center was too loud for him.
Saturday morning, Russell and I walked down to downtown Lewes, where Russell got a little something for breakfast, then we wandered through a few of the shops. By the time we got back to Patrick's house, I was ready for a nap, so I laid down for a bit, although I didn't sleep. We did go out for lunch, but I was still tired when we returned, so I laid down again and slept.
I started feeling worse as the afternoon wore on, but we made it to Suede's show anyway, after stopping at the drug store for some Tylenol to reduce my fever. By the end of the show, I was feeling halfway normal.
Sunday morning, I was feverish again. I had diarrhea. I had no appetite. Russell and Patrick left to get me some won-ton soup, but it just tasted revolting. I slept most of the day, with my fever going over 102°.
Finally, I decided that I had enough control over my bodily functions to drive back to Baltimore about 8 p.m. Patrick offered to let us stay another night, but that would have cost us another $50 or $60 on the car rental, and Russell had to be at work on Monday. Sitting in the traffic for the Bay Bridge is always annoying, but this was a real ordeal.
I took off work again yesterday, intending it to be a day of rest, but I wasn't recovering yet. I was still feverish and afflicted with the diarrhea. I had switched off my cell phone and home phone so I wouldn't be disturbed. Russell couldn't get in touch with me and left work early to come check up on me. He made some lunch for me and I tried to choke it down, but I still had no appetite. I took my meds, but puked the whole thing up a couple of hours later.
But this morning I woke up feeling almost normal. No fever, and I was actually hungry, which isn't surprising, given that I haven't had a decent meal in over two days. I walked over to the 7-11 for some milk and ate some cereal and I've been able to work this morning. So I'm finally on the mend.
