Losing control
Mar. 2nd, 2006 05:42 pmLong ago, I lost control of Mister Piggy. He exists in a mythology of which Russell — not me — is the keeper. He's now Russell's character. I merely draw him.
As evidence, I point to the gallery of images at www.misterpiggy.com. One of the images is labeled "Piggy's friend Chucky during Octoberfest", depicting a character that looks suspiciously like a drunken Mister Piggy hoisting a beer stein. Russell insists that it isn't Mister Piggy, because "Piggy wouldn't do that".
Take a look at the "Smug Canasta Piggy". This image has actually been altered from the original, where Piggy had an ace stuck to his tail. Russell removed it because "Piggy doesn't cheat".
The "real" Mister Piggy is a puppet that I had owned since high school. I purchased it on a whim and dragged it with me when I moved to Baltimore. As an amusement, I would make the puppet interact with Russell. We had a lot of fun with it.
After six months of dating, I broke up with Russell. (That's right, I broke up with him twice!) He petitioned for custody of the pig, which I granted.
Then I got phone calls from him. And the pig. Squeaking into the phone.
Insert eyeroll here.
Still, that puppet comforted him during our separation. After that, Mister Piggy was a separate character, channelled by Russell and occasionally drawn by me.
I have learned not to use my make-believe powers around him, because whatever I do takes root in his fertile imagination and I live to regret it. :-)
