Cruise Report
My Caribbean cruise vacation continues! I'm in Philipsburg, St. Maarten today. By the way, I am taking lots of photographs, but I won't be sorting through them and putting them on Flickr.com until I get back and have some time. I'm pleased with lots of the shots I'm taking, however.
On Tuesday, we docked at St. Johns, Antigua for the day. Our sister ship, Serenade of the Seas was docked right across the pier from us. I got a fantastic shot of the two of them side by side along the pier, and another one in town with the two ships looming in the distance over all of the buildings. I did some shopping, but didn't manage to buy anything except a loud tropical shirt for the Pied Piper Group tropical night.
I'm finding that all of my days are blurring together on the ship; it's difficult to keep track when there's no difference between your week and your weekend. :-) Still, I think that Tuesday night is when we had Eddie Sarfaty, a gay comic, in the Colony Club for the Pied Piper group. He was very entertaining, and very, very sexy. I have a twisted sense of humor sometimes, so I even enjoyed the jokes that got a mixed reaction from the rest of the group.
I also saw a magic show with Kyle Knight and his wife, Misty Tuesday evening. While obviously not a Las Vegas headliner, he was a fun show and a nice way to while away an hour or so. Plus, he's very cute! I'd like to help him make something disappear! The rest of Tuesday evening was dinner at the main dining room and dancing with David in the Atrium again.
Every once in a while, another person stops to compliment me during the day on our dancing. I'm definitely looking for a venue for ballroom dancing when I return to Baltimore. I hope that I can find a gay space in Baltimore or DC, or perhaps a gay-friendly space. Maybe some lessons? I took lessons when I was about twelve or so, but I can't remember any of that now.
Yesterday, David and I got up to watch the ship dock in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, then went to the Windjammer for breakfast. After breakfast, David, Scott, Matt and I played a game of Mexican Train, a dominoes game. I was planning to go into port, but decided to take a nap first. I ended up over sleeping and only got as far as the end of the pier before deciding that I really didn't have time to enjoy myself before I'd have to be back on the ship anyway, so went to the card room off the Colony Club and met Keith, who talked bridge with me for a bit before I joined a Phase 10 game with a group of older men.
Last night, I sat in on a comedy act -- David Morgan and Chuckie. Chuckie is a duck puppet and David supplies his voice in a Daffy Duck sort of way. It was mildly amusing, but ultimately didn't hold my interest and I left before the show was over.
We also had an unscheduled stop last night in St. Croix to refuel. Dennis, Matt and I got off the ship to wander around and take a few photos. There were some dancers in the street and a couple of performers on stilts. We also wandered down to the park on the waterfront to take some night shots of our ship.
Then it was back to the ship for the Tropical Night party for the Pied Piper Group. I'm fully in my "WTF -- I'm on a cruise!" mode and I actually ventured out onto the dance floor with Rob. This wasn't ballroom dancing, but the typical disco-like stuff that I usually avoid, because I feel too self-conscious. This time, I readily followed Rob out on the dance floor. Surprisingly, I garnered a few compliments from that performance, too.
Sadly, no ballroom dancing last night. I lurked around the atrium until the start of the Pied Piper party, but David had gone to dinner at the Chops Grille with some people. I got to dance with David R. from Baltimore a couple of times, though.
Still, people came up to me at the party and asked why they didn't see us dancing in the atrium that evening! Still more compliments on our dancing, too!
This morning, I set a wake-up call for 6 a.m. so we could go out to see the sun rise as we docked at Phillipsburg. We were moving along at a very good clip, so there was a lot of wind, and we did pass through a little bit of rain as we were approaching the island. The sun did come out from behind the clouds, but I never to to see the actual sunrise. I did get some shots of the clouds and the sun that might be nice.
We also got to see another Royal Caribbean ship dock right across from us, the Mariner of the Seas, which is obviously larger than the Radiance. The pier is narrow enough that it looks like you could throw things between them with a little effort. It was fascinating to watch this huge vessel slowly approach and dock next to us.
After breakfast, Matt, David and I went off the ship to take a water taxi to the beach, where David and Matt swam around a little bit. I stood there and took pictures of the ship, the beach, David and Matt, etc. Then I decided that it was silly to be there and not at least get my feet wet. Then I decided that nobody would be able to tell that my underwear wasn't some sort of bathing wear. So I ended up swimming in the water with the two of them and having a wonderful time. I'm not much of a beach person -- redheads don't seek out the sun -- but I had a great time and I regretted not being better prepared.
I think the rest of the day will be a little shopping, then back to the ship for a nap. There may be some canasta with David and I hope there will be more dancing in the atrium tonight!
