Last week, my coworker had made arrangements to work half days. This week, however, she's been absent. My boss spoke to her today and it turns out that she has taken another job.
I don't blame her for finding other work; her risk tolerance is less than mine, I suppose, or maybe she doesn't have the resources that I have (had). I'd expect a more formal departure, though. Common courtesy.
My boss is understandably bummed out. She's a good programmer and we'll miss her contribution. He probably feels like he failed her for not providing a stable business for her to work with.
This will be good for me, however, because any work that he might have assigned to her, I will have to cover.
