Moving Day
Oct. 3rd, 2005 10:49 amThe early units of my PowerBook model have a problem where "white spots" — washed out areas, really — appear on the screen over the course of a few weeks and stay there forever. My laptop suffers from these spots.
Apple has had a repair program in place for those machines affected, but I've been reluctant to give over the machine that manages a lot of my personal and business life. However, the time limit on the repair program is running out, so I told Robyn that I would have to be out of work for a few days while Apple cured my digital pack mule. I was surprised when he offered to loan me his laptop for the week. He has a few machines at home that he can work from during that time.
So I dropped my laptop off at the new Apple Store at the Fashion Centre mall at Pentagon City. The Mac Genius confirmed that all repairs would be under warranty. I made a backup earlier in the day, so I've been spending this morning trying to move some of my preferences and files over to Robyn's laptop. I'm reminded of
gregmce's recent move — I feel like I'm moving in the furniture and making sure everything fits.
The only glitch so far is that Robyn's laptop hasn't been upgraded to the latest operating system, and the old version of Apple's Mail program isn't displaying emails since about the end of May, because that's when I upgraded. The new version of Mail has been storing emails in new places since then.
Other than that, things have behaved predictably. For instance, I knew that my network wouldn't recognize his laptop, because I have it restricted to a shortlist of approved devices. Later on, I'll have to reconfigure my network to accept it, which will be complicated by the fact that I can't login to the base station because the laptop isn't already on the list. :-)
I had a great weekend. I'll be writing more about when I have more time. Work now!
