Feb. 22nd, 2010 11:23 ami just got back from the optometrist with my new contact lenses. i wore them on the walk back and i'm still wearing them now. Holy crap! These things are wonderful! i've been wearing eyeglasses for about thirty-seven years, so walking around without them is enough to make me giddy!
It's unfortunate that i can only wear them for two hours today, but i can extend the period by two hours each day, up to a maximum of ten hours. After a follow-up with the optometrist next Monday, i should be able to wear them throughout the day.
It's also unfortunate that, with my prescription, i won't be able to wear extended-wear contact lenses, so i'll have to take them out each evening. i was really looking forward to being able to wake up with corrected vision.
Inserting the lenses was a real challenge. The right lens went in after a few attempts, but the left lens gave me a lot more trouble. My biggest problem is the tendency of the lens to fall off my finger while i'm trying to get everything lined up. Another problem is my eyelashes, which are long enough to get in the way unless i pull the lid back a lot. Removing the lens was also a huge problem the first time, but re-inserting it was successful on the very first try.
The doctor conducted some tests which indicated everything was all right. Vision was corrected to a blurry 20/20, which he said was "phenomenal" with an astigmatism as severe as mine.
The walk home was amazing. I was actually laughing out loud at how wonderful it was to see things! My focus seemed to be a little off sometimes, but i understand from the optometrist that it will take some time for my eyes to adjust to the lenses. At home, i notice a lot more fuzziness in dim lighting and when trying to focus on nearby objects. i also have a very slight keystoning effect looking at my computer screen; the windows seem a hair wider at the bottom than the top. And a blink can make things slightly worse or slightly better.
Still, i think these are gonna be keepers, for sure.
