i called Russell after work yesterday. i was hoping to visit him for a little while and play the message from the Chesapeake Squares, but he didn't answer his phone. Instead, i went to the neighborhood barber shop and got a hair cut. I'm wearing a high-and-tight for the first time, and i think i like it.

Russell did call back; he had been talking with someone else when i called and let my call go into voice mail, which i heartily endorse. That's what voice mail is for. He actually called while i was getting my hair cut and i called him as i was walking home. i didn't want to schlep back up to his place, so i'll visit him tonight after my analyst appointment.

i was allowed to wear my new contact lenses for six hours yesterday, so i put them in around 6:30 P.M. Then i made a simple dinner salad with carrots, mushrooms, hard-boiled eggs, cheddar cheese, tomato and celery with a little balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. A trio of garlic-stuffed green olives were on the side. Dessert was a navel orange and a small chocolate bar.

Then i jumped in the shower and got dressed before going out to Gay Bingo at the Hippo. i wanted to show off my new hair cut and go out again without my eyeglasses. Gay Bingo is a weekly fundraiser for AIDS Action Baltimore, where my friend Jeffery works. In fact, i saw Jeffrey across the street, walking Jeff and Hector's dog, Mister P, as i exited my apartment. (It was actually a little difficult to recognize him; the contact lenses don't focus very well in low light. I hope they improve as i wear them.)

Jeffery immediately recognized that i had shaved off my beard, but didn't catch that i wasn't wearing eyeglasses until i mentioned it to him. We chatted for a few moments, then i continued to the Hippo. Jeffery finished walking Mister P and joined me there.

As i mentioned, the lenses don't focus as well as eyeglasses in low light, and while the bar lighting was brighter than usual so folks could see their bingo cards, it wasn't bright enough for me to get the best vision. i struggled with that all evening, especially as the evening wore on. my vision seemed to get worse as i got tired, something i never notice with eyeglasses.

Jeffery and i were joined by his friend Wesley, and the three of us chatted while we marked our cards. i enjoyed myself, although i didn't win anything. i enjoyed flirting with the guy walking around selling the instant tickets and i spent another $20 on those without winning anything. Eventually, Jeffery and Wesley went home, leaving their cards with me, which became overwhelming (each "card" is actually a pad of bingo cards, six to a page; as each game is over, you just pull the page off and throw it away). i wasn't able to keep up with the numbers being called. i quickly gave up and gave one of the cards to a couple sitting nearby; i could manage two cards just fine.

It was when i was trying to manage three cards that my vision started to really go fuzzy, but it wasn't as bad with two cards. i don't know why.

Anyway, i never won anything, but it was for a good cause. As soon as the last game was called, i shrugged on my jacket and went home to watch an episode of Torchwood before going to bed.
