Nov. 20th, 2005 08:07 pmMy day started far earlier than I had planned — Lucas and Gracie decided that they had to go out at 7:45 a.m. They were indifferent to my arguments to the contrary, which consisted of me drawing the blankets up over my head and grunting. So we paraded downstairs with me wrapped in a blanket so the little monsters could pee.
theblackdog2071 called to see if I was still intending to visit the National Museum of Natural History today, which was good timing, because I was going to talk myself out of it. :-) He and
sarcastro met me at the Smithsonian metro stop and headed on over.
It turns out that the Darwin exhibit that I was looking for is at the American Museum of Natural History... in New York City. Seeing as how that was a bit far for a day trip, we made do with the offerings at NMNH.
First we wandered through the Mammal Room, which had many specimens on display. One of the most unexpected was the Chinese Water Deer, which actually has tusks. There's actually a wild population of them in Britain and in France. The ones in Britain escaped from a zoo; I suppose that's where the ones in France came from as well.

A few days ago, I finally picked up a new digital camera — a Fujifilm A345. It's a four megapixel camera that also records short movie clips. Amazingly, I snagged it on sale at my local Rite-Aid, along with a free 64MB memory card. So I had fun taking pictures, including this one of a serval.

I took a lot of pictures with the flash off, knowing that the glass cases would only bounce it back at the camera. Some of them turned out a little blurred because it's hard to stay completely still while snapping a photo. The serval turned out rather nice, however. Here's a picture of dung beetle sculpture with no flash and using the camera's macro setting.

Christian and Jon are back home from their weekend in West Virginia. They joined a group of gay Mennonite men meeting at Claymont, where I attended my first CBE. They also have a friend from Iowa, Keith, in tow. The three of them have gone out to a gay Mennonite pot luck for the evening.
