Zzzz... What? Huh?
Jan. 29th, 2006 02:34 pmWell, I've had a week at the new job and the first thing I can report is that there's a big, big difference between working at home, where I can wake up at 8:45 a.m. and start working at 9 a.m., and a ninety minute morning commute, where I have to wake up at 6:00 a.m. Commuting and working takes a total of twelve hours per day. (Cue the "world's smallest violin" from the regular commuters in the audience.)
Most of the week saw me very tired in the afternoons, yawning almost constantly. In fact, we had an event Thursday where the upper management folks talked about how the company performed in 2005 and what the priorities were for 2006. This almost put me in a coma. I was actually nodding off for a second or two several times. I just couldn't help it. Once, I opened my eyes to see the president of the company looking right at me! Eek! Minus points for the new guy!
I ran into Amanda in the lunch room later and described this to her and she laughingly replied that I could rest assured that I was not the only one having trouble staying awake!
Anyway, I'm implementing a new schedule, where I go to bed between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. and I wake up at 6:00 a.m. I'm also avoiding naps in the afternoon. I even set my alarm for 6:00 a.m yesterday and today to make sure my body gets the message. I stayed awake for about an hour before going back to sleep, reasoning that waking up was the goal. Besides, I do love to sleep in on a weekend.
I think it's working, because waking up this morning was rather easy. I didn't feel muddle-headed at all.
