Jun. 16th, 2008 09:59 pmGay marriage is now legal in California, for the moment.
This New York Times article mentions the first marriage in San Francisco at 5:01 P.M. between Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 84. They have been together more than fifty years.
These two ladies put me in mind of Stan Boyden and Bill St. John, two gay square dancers who also were together more than fifty years. Every year at the annual convention, Stan and Bill were congratulated by all assembled with a standing ovation. I still have a "Stan and Bill" button with their smiling faces here someplace. They were celebrities for their love.
It would have been wonderful for them to finally be married, but Stan died in 2005.
Edit: I just realized that, in fact, the picture of Stan in the obituary is from one of those buttons!
