Apr. 18th, 2009 06:19 pmAs I write this, I'm sitting on a lichen-covered rock outcropping on Big Schloss, a mountain in Virginia. I hiked up here this morning with Jeff and we're camping up here tonight.
Jeff is on the other side of the ridgeline; I can hear him playing his guitar. It's always a treat when he brings it along. He dismisses any compliments on his playing, but he knows a lot of songs and it's restful to hear his music along with the wind through the trees and the occasional bird call.
It's nearly six in the evening. The sun will be setting soon. I have a fire laid, and I'll take photos of the sunset before we light the fire and have dinner. Then I expect that Jeff will play more songs by the campfire.
I'm trying out some new camping equipment -- a Hennessey Hammock. It's a hammock enclosed by mosquito netting and it weighs just under two pounds. I have it strung up now and I took a nap in it this afternoon. It's passably comfortable; I think I'm beginning to like it.
Tomorrow morning, we'll hike back down to the car, where we will be meeting a group of friends who are coming for a day hike. Then we'll hike back up here again (after leaving our camping equipment in the car) and continuing down the mountain to the lower parking area.
The initial hike up this morning was very strenuous for me. I didn't do a lot of hiking in 2008 and no camping at all, so I'm out of shape. The first part of the trail is very steep and I kept getting winded and sometimes a little dizzy. I made sure I rested a lot, and Jeff waited patiently each time. Once we got to the ridgeline, the grade evened out and I had an easier time.
